A client shows me her phone. The transformation is flawless. Platinum blonde, perfectly toned, styled to perfection.
Straight away I explain what she’s really looking at.
That image represents 2-3 salon sessions minimum. It’s heavily filtered. And it probably took 8 hours to create.
About 50% of my clients commit once they understand the reality. The other half choose something more achievable.
That gap tells you everything about the consultation crisis we’re facing.
What Instagram Never Shows You
Those viral posts systematically leave out the ongoing maintenance. The numerous toners every few weeks. The specialised shampoos and conditioners. The styling products required daily.
Research confirms that platforms showcase final results whilst hiding the time, effort, and digital enhancement behind them.
Most clients can’t sustain the cost. So we advise lower-maintenance alternatives.
The Emotional Toll Nobody Admits
After 30 years in this industry, Instagram can still make me feel like my work isn’t good enough.
I know those results are edited. I’ve watched session stylists work. I understand the reality.
But when 65% of hairstylists report experiencing anxiety or burnout, you realise how widespread this pressure has become.
It’s even harder for newer stylists entering the industry.
That’s why I’ve purposefully built confidence in my team first and foremost. I remember how difficult that is as a beginner.
The Solution Is Radical Honesty
I teach my stylists to manage expectations from the start. Don’t overpromise. Under promise and over deliver.
Be ok with saying that’s not achievable today. Or maybe ever.
Because 90% of what goes wrong happens in the consultation. That’s where trust is built or broken.
Our clients value our expertise because we tell them the truth. Even when the truth means walking back their Instagram dreams.
